The Outdoors Party recognises that the actions of Branton Tarrant have changed New Zealand. We condemn him and all who propagate violence and hatred.
All lawful firearms licence holders will have to adapt to the impending ban on military style semi-automatic firearms.
The lack of proper consultation with lawful firearms users and organisations that support those users (such as the Council of Licenced Firearms Owners, Sporting Shooters Association of New Zealand, Service Rifle Association and New Zealand Deerstalkers Association) may result in ineffective legislation which impinges on lawful firearms licence holders.
We will press for meaningful consultation with the Government on any further planned changes to arms legislation.
We do not support mandatory gun registration as there is no evidence of this reducing illegal gun ownership and gun related crime anywhere in the world.
We support a full Select Committee process of reviewing our firearms licence application process with the attendant extensive consultation process, providing that any such changes will prevent ownership of firearms by those who are not ‘fit and proper persons’.
We support an enquiry into the future capability of our security services to identify and prevent any future acts of terrorism.
